EARLIER WORK

It’s On You

The night is born to you and me: the masters of our fates to be
Yeah, carpe noctem’s what I do… I just can’t get your kicks for you
So have a ball, or drown in spite, but it won’t depend on me tonight

It’s on you, it’s on you, don’t tell me what you’re gonna do
Just do, be free, be anything you wanna be
It’s on you, it’s on you, it’s on you

Stop looking round, just look at me
And take some notes on what you see
I’m a shameless man with much to share
Some put me down but I don’t care
Cuz all those people playing cool…
Can watch me as I play the fool

 (solo)

You see, I’m gonna give you all I got
And I’m not gonna ask a lot
But if you don’t dance
And you don’t sing
Then why should I give you one damn thing?

Come on!  Let’s write remember whens; tonight’s the page you’re the pen
Please check your fears outside the door, they make you lame and tame and bored
Cuz if you wanna have some fun, you can’t depend on anyone but you

It’s on you, don’t tell me what you gonna do
Just do, be free, be anything you wanna be
It’s on you, it’s on you, it’s on you… yeah yeah yeah!!

Gimme What You Got

When I first saw her dance, didn’t give myself a chance
‘Cuz I knew she was ahead of her time
But I took a deep breath and a double shot of jack
And I met her at the scene of the crime
I said “Hey pretty lady, won’t you shake it for me baby,
Won’t you shake it for me all night long?”
She said “let me tell you what, I’ll do whatever you want
If you’ll learn to play my favorite songs.”
Alright…

I said gimme what you got
Come on and gimme what you got
Cuz if you gimme what you got
Then I’ll give you what you want in return

Now you know you found the one when the summer’s just begun
And you can’t keep her outta your dreams
You don’t even wanna flirt with the summer time skirts
You wanna be a part of her scene
Now this girl’s got class, but she likes to shake her ass
Yeah she’ll shake it for you all night long
It’s just a matter of time and she’ll be mine all mine
I learned to play her favorite song

I said gimme what you got
Come on and gimme what you got
Cuz if you gimme what you got
Then I’ll give you what you want in return

Ordinary Love

I like an ordinary love
The kind you don’t dream of
No silver screen queen on a cheap magazine is for me
I like an ordinary girl
The clam before the pearls
No flash in the pan’s gonna ransome this man
Give me one to last

I like to think that love is not a feeling
‘Cuz feelings come and go just like the breeze
And everybody knows their time is fleeting
‘Cuz beauty only lasts about a year

That’s why an ordinary love
Is what I’m singing of
‘Cuz makeup and rings
Are impermanent things
Give me one to last

So fireworks and mistletoe are dandy
But icing makes you sick without a cake
And no one could survive just eating candy
Or anything a cookie cutter makes
Yeah
That’s why an ordinary love
Is what I’m singing of
‘Cuz when your head’s in the clouds
You’re just on your way down
Give me one to last

Slowin Down

Woah… now here I come to the crossroads
And I’m sure I don’t know which way to go
I think I’d better move out of the fast lane
And take this turn real slow, real slow

So I’m slowin down, down, down for the crossroads
I’m slowin down, down, down ‘cuz I don’t know
Which way to go, go, GO! That’s what we live for… right?
Well not right now I’m slowin down, I’m slowin down

I’ve seen signs telling me how to get there
Yeah they told me what I’d find straight ahead
But never did they show all the rocks in the road
And the lights kept eternally red

So I’m slowin down, down, down for the crossroads
I’m slowin down, down, down ‘cuz I don’t know
Which way to go, go, GO! That’s how we get there… right?
Well not right now I’m slowin down, I’m slowin down

Well I guess I could turn around now,
But I’ve come such a long, long, long way
And a mystery lies to my left, to my right
I guess I’d just better choose one and pray

So I’m slowin down, down, down for the crossroads
I’m slowin down, down, down ‘cuz I don’t know
Which way to go, go, GO! That’s what we live for… right?
Well not right now I’m slowin down, I’m slowin down

You Only Kiss Me When You’re Drunk

You only kiss me when you’re drunk
Well I guess that’s fine with me
Until you say you don’t remember
That’s how you keep me on my knees

You say you’re sorry every morning
Well I guess I’m sorry too
You see, I’m sorry for myself
I shoulda never fell in love with you

You only love me when you’re lonely
Girl, I would love you anytime
I may not be your one and only
Though I pray one day you’ll be mine…

But you say we can never happen
And then you kiss me when you’re drunk
Well if you don’t want me around
You shouldn’t drink so goddamn much

In the Blood

Yes, I am the tax man and I’ve come to take your cash
But don’t you worry honey, you gonna get it all back
In the roads, the schools, the armies, and the police
And then I gotta steal a little… for the king and queen
Oh I know what you’re thinking “no, it can’t be true
Why do they get my money?”
Well it’s simple, ‘cuz they’re better than you

And they ain’t gonna listen to a single word you say
‘Cuz they had the biggest guns and used ‘em back in the day
Oh, I know what you’re saying, that “tyranny was a sin.”
And now “the times have changed,” tell me where does the time begin?
And tell me where do you sit to eat your food?
I think that makes it pretty clear who’s better than who
Yes, they’re better than you…

Why?  Don’t you know

It’s in the blood, baby
It’s in the blood
It’s in the blood, baby
It’s in the blood

Yeah I’m sorry you were raised in a house you could not choose
But some were born to steal and the rest were born to lose
So help Morrisey and Johnny as they sing the blues
Or you can deal with the God-given fact that they’re better than you
God said it was true…

Damned

Most people fear what they don’t know
That’s why they all look the same
Those brave enough to break the mold
Get laughed or thrown out of the game

And you’ll be damned if you do and damned if you don’t
And damned cuz you want to
But do what you’re told, get in line, don’t ask why
And they won’t mess with you

Some people think they got it all figured out
Way too refined for the crowd
You like simple, easy things that anyone can share
And they’re gonna put you down

And you’ll be damned if you do and damned if you don’t
And damned cuz you want to
But be cynical, complex, self-absorbed, and select
And they won’t fuck with you

You can’t please everybody else, everybody else
Everybody else, oh no…
They hate on everybody else, everybody else
Everybody else, it’s war!!!

When you can’t make your music too obscure
You can’t make it too cliché
The folkies and the hippies say you’re selling out
And the frat boys say you’re gay

And you’ll be damned if you do and damned if you don’t
And damned ‘cuz you want to
But don’t write a song, in fact don’t do anything at all
And they won’t fuck with you
No, they won’t fuck with you…

In My Dreams

All alone by the ocean, watching stars as they die
I hear the song of an angel – you know it:
A sad and lonely cry
I said “now, angel… won’t you tell me what’s a-happening?”
She looks into my eyes
She says “I’m sorry, but I never got to love you baby
At least not in real life, but

I’ll see you in my dreams
Your love you’ll send to me
‘Cuz I can see you suffering
But I just gotta let you be

Then she’s there in the morning
The angel of my nights
Would hold her tight, keep her close now
Never let her outta my sight!
But the dream always ends there, you know…
When the angel starts to cry
I say “I’m sorry, but I never got to love you baby,
At least not in real life but

I’ll see you in my dreams
Your love you’ll send to me
‘Cuz I can see you suffering
But I just gotta let you be
In my dreams…

Baby, you need to know
That every time I said goodbye
I meant “I love you”
But I never told you, shoulda known
You always knew, you always knew

I’ll see you in my dreams
Your love you’ll send to me
‘Cuz I can see you suffering
But I just gotta let you be

Hippie Girl

Don’t think about me hippie girl, don’t think about this song
Just close your eyes, free your mind and… maybe sing along
I’m not the one, I’m not the one, but be with nothing less
And if he don’t treat you like I did, then lay that boy to rest

When you run in circles as fast you can
Let me tell you darling, that’s no way to find a man

Don’t dream about me hippie girl, don’t dream about this song
Just close your eyes, free your mind, and maybe sing along
‘Cuz you only get just what you’re worth and you’re good as what you get
So if you can’t find the one you want, start looking for yourself

When you run in circles as fast you can
Let me tell you darling, that’s no way to find a man

I’m worried ‘bout you hippie girl and I’m sending you this song
So close your eyes, stop asking why… and help me sing-along –

La la la da-da-da
La-da, da… da-da da-da

In The End You Die
(and in the end you die)
You do or you don’t and you will or you won’t AITEYD
You take a chance or miss the dance AITEYD
You cuss and swear or one big square AITEYD
You rule the flock or just your cock AITEYD

And all’s well that ends well, all’s well that ends well, all’s well that ends well
AITEYD

You’re peacock grand or head in the sand AITEYD
You go out in drag or call it the plague AITEYD
You’re Christ or Jew or Mus or Budh AITEYD
You’re pale or tan or brown or red  AITEYD

And all’s well that ends well, all’s well that ends well, all’s well that ends well
AITEYD

You rock the boat or never vote AITEYD
You fight the war or send the poor AITEYD
You give a bit, or hoard your shit AITEYD
You’re considerate of the earth and your great-grandchildren or you’re a selfish jackass

EITHER WAY:
And all’s well that ends well, all’s well that ends well, all’s well that ends well
And in the end… you die…

That doesn’t mean… that you don’t try… just don’t put yourself up so high
When your fate is the same as the next guy – and he gonna die!!!

I Wanna Thank You

This one’s for all of my Saints, you know who you are
For your clothes, your homes, your meals, your pull-out couches,
You’re gospel parable, my friends…
And believe me when I say:
I’ve got it so good, so good, so good, so good, soooooo good
‘Cuz you let me do what I do
Yeah, I’d be naught without you
And if I could give it all back beyond mere music and words…
You know that I would

But it’s a high-wire show, an unpaved road that I walk
Always I move with your love to the next carnival
With barely a moment to say

That I wanna thank you, I wanna thank you, but what can I do?
I’ll sing you this song, and then when I’m gone,
I’ll pray that I gave you as much… as I got

This is the part of the song where I pay some dues
Here’s to you and you and you,
My loved ones, my mentors, and enemies too… yeah, even you

I may be just one man, but let me attest
To the love I’ve been privileged on this ominous mess
And if I live for one thing… it’s to give it all back
It’s just so much… and I’m only one man,

Still, I wanna thank you… I wanna thank you
But oh, what I can I do?
I’ll sing you this song, a kiss and I’m back on the road again
And I wanna thank you… I wanna thank you
But oh, what can I say?
These words aren’t enough, but nothing’s enough
And that’s why I pray there’s a God, to give it all back…
(ohhhhh… cuz I know I can’t…)

I wanna thank you, I wanna thank you
But ohhhhhhhhhhhh… what can I do?
I’ll sing you this sing, and then when I’m gone
I’ll pray that it all was enough for now

LOVE AND POLITICS

Fear

Many died of fear of dying
Many died of rust
Many died at institutions
Many died in must

Many died when intuition
Lost to rules arcane
Many died when superstition
Won the head of state

And yes all that lived
Was all that tried
You know all the cants died

I’m coming out a pyro-poet
Not afraid to burn
Extortion prophets, blackmail books
And temple skyscrapers

I’m coming out with dirt all over
What’s the point in pure?
To be a tabloid cure
For half a billion insecure

I’m with all that lived
And all that tried
Because all the cants died…

Why do they die?
Why can’t they try?
Who froze their insides?
Who killed them?  Who killed them?  Who killed them?
Don’t you know?
It was fear
It was fear
It was fear

Nobody

His story’s dead
Yours has no end
Don’t let him also take
Your smile…

Cuz nobody’s watching you from above
And nobody died so you might suffer
It takes love
It takes courage babe
To rise each day
With the sun

Don’t fear
The first stone
Not alone
You’re not alone

And nobody holds a cult monopoly on love
When they chant that stuff
It’s to grab the scruff
Of your soul

Cuz nobody’s watching you from above
And nobody died to pay a ransom that never was

It’s all time… flow… change… let go
The good… the bad… they die… there’s no tab
This guilt – your own… c’est tout, let it go
Erase with the sun all the laps that you’ve run

Bad Tradition

Ma says... can’t watch
Says Bad plays Good, you can’t tell ‘em apart
What’s more, you can’t talk
No Q’s, no A’s, no fruit, no chalk
What’s more, you can’t touch
Your heres and nows should come from dust
What’s more, you can’t dance
No boys in skirts, no girls in pants
So now everybody knows about what now?
Nothing, just some bad traditions

And pa’s scared, must have rules
“to their own devices they end up fools”
So it’s books chasing books
With this worm called love and a phantom hook
Then a line – through the town
To keep first ones high and the late ones down
Call that fact, but that’s myth
‘Cuz you’ve got both sides with cardinal sins
But only one that’s gonna pay for them,
And that’s a bad tradition

All this because
A thief found lambs
He stole their lives and wives and land
Then froze them all in place
Blue blood: on top, new paupers: base
Of course they tried to fight
But pa made laws to rid that right
With policemen to serve and protect
The thief from all who would protest
“Two wrongs don’t make a right”
Said the thief…
And that’s a bad tradition

Well, you don’t have to pay for all
These fools who went before you
All their dominos depend on yours today
And you shouldn’t have to pay for it
‘Cuz someone pissed all over it
And drove the other animals away

But it just goes on…
Because the thief became “The Prince”
And the paupers tried to bury him
But he got far ahead
By going back to claim the dead
Put God on all his coins
And saved the souls of those who joined
He tortured those opposed: he made them
Speak his tongue and wear his clothes
Or else they’d be denied, ignored, excluded…
Well, that’s a bad tradition

So now it’s ma and pa and thief
Round every corner, hear them breathe:
“If you don’t like it you can leave,”
With nowhere else to go I grieve
Cuz I can’t watch, talk, touch, or dance
They call this love, but it’s romance
The greatest story ever told:
The greatest method of control
And they’re all fat off a thief’s gold
And that’s a bad tradition

The Man You Loved

I remember you
Your eyes so true
Our wounds so new
I was your strength
We shared the pain

But time is change
And feelings sway
I lost my faith
And ran away…
I’m still the man you loved
The man you asked to stay
I lost my faith… we all lose faith

I may look cold and frayed
But you’re so far away
Come closer babe, come see the change
That you deny

I have arrived
And there’s still time
As long as we’re alive
Time to grow back shattered limbs
And make them stronger than the wildest winds
The winds that shake, the winds that maim
The winds that pound you ‘til your dying day
But I won’t break, I’ll rearrange
And when the storm blows all securities away… I will remain

For I remember you
Your eyes so true
Our love so new
I’ll be your strength
I’ll take the pain

As skin decays
I will remain
To hold you tight
Against the night
For I’m the man you loved
I’m asking you to stay
Please take your time… And I’ll do mine
(do you think it’ll work?  -oh she’ll cry, you can’t leave her with that… what do you say to make her laugh or to feel better?   -that’s easy…)

It’s All Good

It’s all good, it’s all good
As long as you’re in my life
I can show you that I love you
Be the man you can rely on
When you need a hand to hold
Or a shoulder on to cry
I will be there… always at your side

Yes, darling
It’s all good, it’s all good
As long as you’re around
I can be the one to catch you
When the world’s bringing you down
And should you need to get away
You know I’ll never hesitate
To pick you up… and take you for a ride

For if there’s one thing that I know
It’s “always be a friend”
‘Cuz when you’re down and out
Your friends will be there to the end

And that’s why it’s all good, it’s all good
As long as you’re my friend
We can catch the midnight movie
Play guitar and mandolin
Or do absolutely nothing
‘Cuz I really just like having you around!

For if there’s one thing that I know
It’s “always be a friend”
‘Cuz when you’re down and out
Your friends will be there to the end

And that’s why it’s all good, it’s all good
As long as you my friend
We can dance until we’re wasted
We can learn to make amends
Or do absolutely nothing
Cuz I really just like having you around

So here’s a silly song for you to listen to when you are blue
And then you know what we can do
And that’s why it’s all good

About Love

“this song is about love”

See her shine… and then something’s begun
Call her mine, then we forfeit the gun
In my mind, I could find
Something greener, but that’s the same place
Where I never grow old

And they said that it couldn’t be done
That’s a war that can never be won
But if they really know
What they’re talking ‘bout
Tell me why aren’t they holding their breath

And they’d like to tell you about love…
They’d like to tell you… But they can’t… oh no they can’t
All they can tell you is:
Gotta get mine, gotta get mine, gotta get mine, gotta mine (that’s all they say)

And I’d like to tell you about love…
Well, I’d like to tell you about my day
But that would take all day
So here’s a minute for ya…
When I think about love… bandied and battered as the concept may be…
I think of… This old couple I knew a few years back
The guy was taking care of the girl cuz she was… GONE
I mean, she was there, but whatever she was the first 90 years of her life
She was not THAT anymore
She did not know who he was, she did not know who SHE was
She did know… WHAT was going on
I mean, every night this man would wrestle a stranger of 60 years acquaintance just to fall asleep in her arms…

He had to clothe her, he had to feed her, he had to bathe her, I mean he had to WIPE her
And I knew right there and from then on… THIS IS LOVE
anything less than this could only be a subordinate degree
And yeah, most people will tell you it’s too hard, they’ll tell you that it’s unrealistic, that you only live once, that you gotta look out for yourself.. they say, they say, they say

Well they say… that it couldn’t be done
Soon as it hurts, take the money and run
But if they really know what they’re talking about
Tell me why are they trying to hide
From that ghost in their eyes

Mr McNicholl

Sometimes you take the wrong road
Sometimes you catch on fire
Sometimes you need a friend to get you through
Your life out on a wire

So let’s all raise a glass or two
And toast a friend like mine
He took the trip to hell with me
And brought us back alive

Yes, it’s cheers, cheers Mr McNicholl
A light through the tunnel, a hand up the hill
Cheers, cheers Mr McNicholl
If I didn’t kill you then nobody will

And some say good friends listen
But I say they respond
They’re the first to knock you down
When you are clearly in the wrong

And good friends see you spill your guts
They’ve seen you when you cry
They’ve seen you when you kiss the ground
And seen you kiss the sky

So it’s cheers, cheers Mr McNicholl
A John at the Cross and my Virgil through hell
Yes it’s cheers, cheers Mr McNicholl
If I didn’t kill you then nobody will
If I didn’t kill you then nobody will

Rich Kid Blues

He never had to live without
He never had to be the clown
They were pinin in the street
But he never heard a sound
He bought so many bridges, had to burn a few down
And sing the rich kid blues
Spend the evening crying bout what he can’t have
He sings the rich kid blues
Every day another fortune in the trash
Yeah he got it so good he wish he had it bad
Another rich white boy who wants to be a poor black man

She never had to live without
Her parents paid those ransom pouts
A household pet with a hurricane meow
Knows exactly what she wants and yes she wants it now
Or sings the rich kid blues
Spend the evening crying bout what she can’t get
She sings the rich kid blues
Every day another fortune in the trash
Never been out on her own, but she been in on daddy’s cash
Another spoiled rich girl, tell her “no,” –doesn’t understand

And you don’t know how it feels
No you don’t know how it feels
You never been on your own
Always a free ticket home
And relatively well known
You’re not a rolling stone

No no no no you sing the rich kid blues
Spend the evening bored out of your mind
You sing the rich kid blues
Nothing to do, but so much time
You got everything you want and still you wanna hate
Another party every night with nothing, nothing, nothing.
Nothing to celebrate

And even me I sing the rich kid blues
Spend my evenings praying for the sick and poor
I sing the rich kid blues
I wish they knew what they were dying for
Me, I got it so good I almost feel bad
But all my money’s in the market so I wash my hands
Bargain Boogie

Can’t drink the water
Hurts to breathe the air
Can’t drink the water
Hurts to breathe the air
Call it anything you want,
I’m not a hippie and I’m still scared

Cuz you did the Bargain Boogie with the future as your bid
You do the Bargain Boogie with the future as your bid
Yeah you got what you want, sucks to be your kids

Another traffic jam
Hey, was that your plan?
Another traffic jam
Was that your plan?
When you sold more want than
Need, took the money and ran

You did the Bargain Boogie with the future as your bid
You do the Bargain Boogie with the future as your bid
There are too many cars and it sucks to be our kids

One billion
Two billion
Three billion
Four
5 Billion
6 Billion
Soon to be more
Nobody tempering, nobody fasts
No good solutions cuz nobody asks
No one believes elementary math
To see it won’t last, it just can’t, it just can’t, it just can’t…

Thanks for nothing

Ku Town Ku.

I came dying for a place to sleep
But nothing in this town was free
They wrote compassion on the keep
But no one came to rescue me
How can you find your way to Oz
Without a bed to dream upon?
And fences built round every field
Protecting nothing left to steal

It was the missing link
Down in Ku Town Ku

So, north of town is liberty
But not a single mind was free
Like everything was brown and green
The colored bugs had all been eaten
Except a few who joined the gang
And learned their duties as a Man
To worship books that they cant read
I saw no shepherds, only sheep

But I found the missing link
Down in Ku-Town Ku

Where truth depends on who you read
So now they’re on St. 23
With churches built to worship him
And statues of this wizard king
So buy his book and join the club
Say “I accept” you too can judge
For those who can control the keys
Control the locks and you and me

I found the missing link
Down in Ku Town Ku
Down in Ku Town Ku
Down in Ku Town Ku
Down in Ku Town Ku

Thumbs

I got thumbs
I made tools
I made gods
I got fools

I got thumbs
I made guns
I made god
I got u

Living by the sword no more
Got your mind chasing tail in a rusty verdict hole
We make truth, no more wars
No more bodies, we bomb souls
Throw our book at those opposed
‘Til they bow to fossil codes
Or they’ll be ostracized, crucified, marginalized, demonized
Bend ‘em ‘til they break and call it love
We’ll call it love
We’ll call it love
We’ll call it love…

My Own Way

I’ll make my own way
I’ll take my sweet time
You’ll never break me
I’m not afraid to die
I’ll die before I’m made a slave
Take up my cross before a grave
Is laid on my hands
For random homelands
A thousand souls scream out each night
We sleep so soundly
I’ll make my own way
I’ll make my own way

I’ll fear truth and true gods
But I will not fear your god

I’ll make my own way
Destroy your mores
I’m not afraid of hell, I’m there
Where might is right
And bombs decide
‘Cuz no one gets why Jesus died
I’ll make my own way
I’ll make my own way
If you believe in holy lands
Leave me alone, cuz
I… don’t… want… your… god.

American Idle

I
Well it’s the
Darwin Express, you gotta do what you can
Keep the Tower of Babel in Amerika’s hands
Cuz we’ll be the end of or the best in the world
Where the ying eats the yang
And terror whitewashes swirls
So with us, against us
Doesn’t matter, we’re already there…
We don’t care

II
And truly you are the quarry
Whether sober or saved
So get some toys for the time
You’re still on top of your grave
If they don’t distract you
We got tabloids and rum
Or millionaires selling Jesus
Like a miracle drug
Or lottery singers singing
“what does it mean to pay dues?”

III
Or to lose…
Cuz there’s not time for foundation
Hardly time for repair…
Only time to amass
What we could easily share
Not our fault the commons
Are so tragically lame
They weren’t kicked out of Eden
She was serial raped
And won’t return ‘til we learn
That all we need
We already have

Huck Finn

Deep at night
A sea of safe sad dreams
Are seen
And screened
By kings and queens

Buried on a sailboat
Lost at sea
Your ghost
Our tree
Some film and me

Faded on a freeway
Tiers unknown
Turn to stone

Parent patience pawned
On patient pills
Their cure
For time
Time was the cure

Painting frames on
Barbed-wire-fencèd Truth
The “T”
Became
What tortured you

Carried home on friends
Six thrones well-known
Turn to stone

Now awake
The sake of breathing changed
From games
To grooves
And finding you

Sermon

And no longer will our actions be induced by fear or the promise of reward.
We will act because we love our actions and the effect they have on the space around us.

We will reject tradition that poisons our growth as a species, even at the expense of comfort.

And, throughout all of this struggle, this chaos, this… evolution - we will continue to celebrate the gift of our existence.

We will realize that without tragedy, there is no opportunity for comedy…

That all the friction in this world causes the energy that gives life.

And we will all have different ideas about this life, ideas that give rise to notions of beauty and morality… of oughts and should be’s…

And we will respect these differences… because no men or women are created equal

And we must learn to embrace our differences instead of trying to destroy them

We must let humility teach us that not one of us has the all encompassing view necessary to understand any event or decision made… and so we must always arm ourselves with enough empathy for even the most appalling situations - knowing that every reaction is the result of an equal or greater action.

And our actions are largely influenced by our circumstances,
So, let us work to sustain an environment of quality and strength,
not quantity and weakness.

Because we don’t need more, we need better!

Let our children learn that no person or thing can ever give them value…

These freedoms I encourage frighten people who fear chance or individualism,
but our only real possession in this lifetime is our ability to define ourselves by our own decisions and actions.

And if we have to suffer for this autonomy, if we have to fight for it, even if we have to die for it, we will maintain it.
